Introducing Take Control: Prevent Serious Injuries and Fatalities (SIFs)

Over the past year MAA has worked closely with the NSSGA’s Health & Safety Committee to develop their new safety program, Take Control: Prevent Serious Injuries and Fatalities.  The goal of the program is for it to be used as a guide to integrate into existing training and share within your company. This program was created for every aggregate and construction materials company to utilize because worker safety is an inherent value for all.

A little about the SIF Program…

The stone, sand and gravel industry is committed to the prevention of all injuries. However, industry experience and data indicates a need to enhance focus on preventing situations that would result in serious injuries and fatalities (SIFs). These are defined as injuries that are life altering, life threatening or result in a fatality. The aggregates industry continues to see a decline in reportable injuries, but the decline in SIFs has not been as quick by comparison and has plateaued in recent years. Therefore, NSSGA’s Health & Safety Committee decided to create a program dedicated to preventing SIFs.

The Take Control program highlights 10 activities that have a high potential to cause a SIF, then identifies high-risk tasks and associated critical controls to be in place to prevent a SIF. The program is intended to supplement existing training programs and put a spotlight on situations where miners face a higher potential of a SIF occurring. The Take Control Program includes:
