Road Funding Deal Tentatively Reached
Speaker Matt Hall, Governor Whitmer and Senator Winnie Brinks have announced that they have reached a deal on road funding, though many details are still being finalized.
Final voting on budget bills may not occur until next week.
Early reports suggest the agreement could provide between $1.5 and $1.85 billion in additional funding for Michigan’s roads, which is a good step forward.
The new revenue is expected to come from several sources, including:
- Replacing the current sales tax on gasoline with an equivalent gas tax
- Adding a wholesale tax on cannabis
- Other funding measures under discussion
This week, various budget bills passed both the House and Senate to start the complicated path toward a final budget. However, the full details of the funding plan will not be known until next week.
While the proposed funding falls short of the $3.9 billion estimated to fully repair Michigan’s deteriorating roads and bridges, MAA is encouraged by this progress and thanks Speaker Hall, Governor Whitmer and Senate Majority Leader Brinks for their efforts.
We will continue working with lawmakers and industry partners to push for the long-term funding of Michigan's infrastructure needs.
