MSHA Enhanced Guarding Focus

During a recent Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) inspection, inspectors emphasized the need for enhanced guarding on conveyor belts, particularly those located 7 feet or less above ground level.

MSHA indicated that future enforcement efforts will place increased attention on these lower-profile belts and encouraged operators to evaluate whether additional protective measures are needed. Recommended enhancements may include the installation of pull cords, physical guards, or railings.

These safeguards are intended to reduce the risk of contact with moving belts and help ensure that, in the event of a slip or fall, an individual encounters a protective barrier or emergency stop device rather than the belt itself.

MAA encourages members to review their conveyor systems, especially lower-elevation belts, and take proactive steps to address guarding where appropriate to support miner safety and regulatory compliance.
