In 1908, Verplank Ice & Coal was founded by packing, storing, and supplying homes in the summer with ice cut from a frozen Spring Lake during the winter. During the winter months, coal was also supplied to heat those same homes. In the late forties when refrigeration made sawdust stored ice obsolete, the Verplank family transitioned to construction aggregates and rebranded to Verplank Dock Co. Since the transition, the company has seen steady growth and expansion in the West Michigan market supplying bulk construction aggregates including limestone, slag, trap rock and ice control salt.Now in its fourth generation, the company proudly operates Verplank Trucking Co and Verplank Dock Co which supply over two million tons of aggregate and other materials each year to the West Michigan market.
